Temecula District 5 Election: Zak Schwank Leads Four-Candidate Council Race in Early Returns

TEMECULA, Riverside County — November 4, 2026. Zak Schwank is leading a four-candidate race for Temecula City Council District 5 in the first unofficial returns from the November 3 general election. The outcome is not yet final, and election officials still have a large number of ballots to process.

Where the race stands

According to Riverside County Registrar of Voters Update #8, reported by Valley News on the morning of November 4, Schwank has 37.74% of votes counted in the district. Russell Shirley follows with 31.23%; Yuan Hawkes has 17.74% and Laurel Lamont 13.30%. Schwank’s early advantage over Shirley is 6.51 percentage points. These percentages describe counted votes, not a certified result.

Why the result can still move

Riverside County says its election-night counting is complete, but estimated approximately 485,000 vote-by-mail and 11,000 conditional voter registration ballots remained to be counted countywide. That outstanding countywide number is not a count of ballots still outstanding in Temecula District 5 specifically.

Residents should follow new official updates before treating any candidate as elected. The district result is a local City Council contest, separate from countywide transportation measures and statewide offices.
